Quick Writing Advice, Part 1: Be Weird.
Short enough to read over your morning coffee, consider this series the advice I'd give myself when I was just getting started.
Frank Herbert wrote about god-worms that people now make memes about decades after his death. Hajime Isayama’s Attack On Titan has a fervent fan base; a manga and anime featuring giant cannibalistic humanoids that run around naked. Speaking of cannibals; Tender Is The Flesh, anyone?
“Weirdness” is highly subjective. Leto Atreides II may not phase you but an 18-year-old being mated with a 500-year-old fae man is where you draw the line, and vice versa. There is a fan base out there for everyone.
Write the thing you think people might consider weird. This is always my first piece of writing advice to people. Write it for you. If you like it, others will. Beginning your writing journey thinking you have to fit into a specific mold will only hold you back.
I think this is my favorite piece of advice. It has always worked.
